Newark, NJ – (October 8, 2013) In 1942, a teenage Sarah Vaughan won the Apollo Theater’s amateur singing competition in a performance that was a launching pad for a career that transformed one of America’s original art forms and elevated the craft of jazz vocal music. Last year, Cyrille Aimee focused the world on vocal jazz in Newark again as the first-ever winner of the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition, part of the TD James Moody Democracy of Jazz Festival.  For the second installment of the awards, a distinguished panel of musicians, music industry executives, NJPAC leadership and online voters culled through hundreds of submissions from the around the globe, including United States, Switzerland, Australia, Japan, Luxembourg, Belgium, Hungary and Canada, to choose five finalists and a “Rising Star” for the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition, the largest competition of its kind in the world.

NEW YORK, September 27, 2013 – Eighty-eight. It’s a number that in China conveys good fortune. For ham radio operators “88” is shorthand for hugs and kisses. Astronomers will tell you that there are eighty-eight constellations in the sky. But for George Wein that number hits a little closer to home. This October, the world-renowned jazz and music impresario will be celebrating his 88th birthday. The celebration includes George Wein: The Life of a Legend, a two-night run at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s The Allen Room on October 3 and 4, at 7:00 pm.

New York, NY, September 17, 2013 –  Jazz impresario and pianist George Wein, affectionately referred to as “The Father of Jazz Festivals” after creating the Newport Jazz Festival in 1954, celebrates his 88th birthday by performing with his Newport All-Stars in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s The Allen Room on October 3 & 4 at 7pm. Joining Wein for these special concert events are tenor saxophonist Lew Tabackin, trumpeter Randy Brecker, clarinetist and saxophonist Anat Cohen, guitarist Howard Alden, bassist Peter Washington, and drummer Lewis Nash. New York Times jazz journalist (and Wein’s biographer) Nate Chinen hosts the events. Wein will swing firmly in the here-and-now, and retrospect on his life and times with stories and photos from his personal collection.
