Natixis Global Asset Management and Newport Jazz Festival Announce 2013 Scholarship Recipients and Performance Lineup

·   Newport Music Scholarships will go to Chase Ceglie from Rhode Island Music Educators Association Senior All-State Jazz Band and Ray Fuller from Massachusetts Music Educators Association All-State Jazz Band

Boston, July 29, 2013 – Natixis Global Asset Management (NGAM) and Newport Festivals Foundation, Inc.™, in their third year partnering on the Newport Jazz Festival®, today announced the winners of the Natixis Global Asset Management Newport Jazz Festival Scholarships. In an expansion of its scholarship program, this year NGAM will grant two $5,000 scholarships. The awards will be presented at the Newport Jazz Festival to Chase Ceglie, tenor saxophonist in the Rhode Island Music Educators Association (RIMEA) Senior All-State Jazz Band, and to Ray Fuller, trumpeter with the Massachusetts Music Educators Association (MMEA) All-State Jazz Band. RIMEA is set to perform on the Harbor Stage on Saturday, August 3, at 10:45 a.m. and MMEA will perform on the Harbor Stage on Sunday, August 4, at 11 a.m.

“We’re pleased to have the continued support of Natixis Global Asset Management as we near the Newport Jazz Festival’s incredible milestone of 60 years,” said George Wein, producer and chairman of the Newport Festivals Foundation, Inc. “I’m blessed to be able to share the gift of music and expose audiences to both the legends of jazz and the up-and-coming talents. NGAM’s support helps broaden those opportunities.”

“Partnering with George Wein on the Newport Jazz Festival is truly an honor,” said John Hailer, president and chief executive officer, Natixis Global Asset Management – The Americas and Asia. “His passion for music is infectious, and his effort to maintain the legacy of the festival across the globe aligns well with our corporate philosophy of thinking about the long term and uniting global cultures.”

Over the years the Newport Jazz Festival has hosted performances by some of the world’s leading established artists. It has also provided worldwide exposure for the emerging artists who will make up the next generation of jazz musicians. NGAM’s own desire to support jazz took shape three years ago when the firm signed on as presenting sponsor of the 2011 Newport Jazz Festival. That support has grown to include a scholarship program for young musicians, as well as a sponsorship agreement with the Berklee College of Music.

“Music is a form of artistic expression that offers many social and academic benefits,” said Hailer. “We’re proud to help support opportunities for multi-disciplined student musicians to focus on their music and college pursuits.”

At this year’s Newport festival, NGAM will present two $5,000 Natixis-Newport Jazz Festival Scholarships to selected student musicians Chase Ceglie from Newport, RI, and Ray Fuller from Foxboro, MA. Chase is a tenor saxophonist with the RIMEA band, and Ray is a trumpet player with MMEA. Each student will be awarded a scholarship following performances at the festival with their respective all-star high school jazz bands.

Founded in 1954 as the first annual jazz festival in America, the Newport Jazz Festival has been host to numerous legendary performances by some of the world’s leading established and emerging artists. The storied tradition continues on this year’s slate, with saxophonist Wayne Shorter’s 80th Birthday Celebration featuring the Wayne Shorter Quartet with Danilo Perez, John Patitucci and Brian Blade plus special guest Herbie Hancock; Chick Corea (fronting The Vigil Band); Eddie Palmieri (with his Salsa Orchestra); Roy Haynes (leading his Fountain of Youth Band); Joshua Redman; Michel Camilo; Terence Blanchard and others sharing the festival bill with rising stars Esperanza Spalding; Gregory Porter; Robert Glasper; Edmar Castañeda; Hiromi; and Jon Batiste. Other highly anticipated performances include a set marking the 35th anniversary of New Orleans greats The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Steve Coleman in three different projects, veteran Chicago vocalist Dee Alexander and the Dizzy Gillespie™ Big Band under the direction of Paquito D’Rivera.
