NEWPORT, RI, March 2, 2015 – Don’t miss one of Newport’s favorite social events when the Newport Festivals Foundation, Inc.™ returns to The Breakers on Saturday, August 1, at 7:30 pm for its Gala Benefit featuring performances by Cassandra Wilson, Michel Camilo, Jon Batiste and Stay Human, to celebrate the 90th birthday of festival impresario George Wein. Although his birthday is October 3, there’s no telling who may show up to surprise him.

Governor Gina Raimondo and Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse will serve as Honorary Gala co-chairs, which Wein says, “is a true indication of what the Newport Festivals Foundation means to the state of Rhode Island.”

“Cassandra Wilson has graciously agreed to perform. Without question, she is one of the finest of jazz singers performing today. To be able to see her in such an intimate setting is a privilege,” added Wein. “Jon has appeared as a soloist at the Gala, but never with his full group. When he starts playing his melodica and strolls through the crowd, the fun he is having will instantly be communicated to you. Michel Camilo, who is one of my favorite pianists, will thrill you with his musicianship and the uniqueness of his style of solo performance.”

Notes from The Wein Machine: Thank You!

Notes from The Wein Machine: Thank You!

Picture
A Fantasyland.  The past two weeks at the Newport Folk Festival and Newport Jazz Festival was just that.  Two exciting, entertaining, enlightening, engaging, exuberant, exhilarating, evolving, emotional and occasionally damp festivals.  It was a memorable 60th Anniversary for Jazz and 55th year for Folk.

To me, the stars of both festivals were the dedicated, music-loving fans, who in spite of rain on the Sunday of Folk and Saturday of Jazz, never gave up the joyous feeling that both festivals inspired.

Over 53,000 people attended these iconic festivals this year.  Some memorable moments for me were the historic concert by Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, which showed ultimate respect for the history of the music born of Newport over the past six decades.

NEWPORT, RI, July 18, 2014 – If you ask the Newport Jazz Festival® and Newport Folk Festival® staff what they like about the festivals, no doubt each and every one will get around to talking about the excitement of watching young people enjoy, share and eventually grow up to love music. This summer, in celebration of the music of the iconic events, Newport Festivals Foundation™ presents its second annual Family Concert on Wednesday, July 30, at 6:00 pm at Fort Adams State Park. Held during Newport’s annual BridgeFest, the free concert features Bari Koral Family Rock Band and Oran Etkin’s Timbalooloo: Wake Up, Clarinet! in a special concert for young people.

“It is a major goal of the Foundation to build upon the legacy of the Jazz and Folk festivals by encouraging families to take part in the concerts and education events we present throughout the year,” said Deborah Ross, Education Director of the Newport Festivals Foundation. “As a parent, I know how important it is to share music and the arts with kids, and I hope that families throughout the area will come out to this free concert to not just enjoy the music, but to create fond memories for years to come.”
