Jazz & Heritage Center Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation - the nonprofit that owns Jazz Fest - today opened its long-awaited education and community facility, the George and Joyce Wein Jazz & Heritage Center, with a series of events that begins with a press conference and ribbon-cutting followed by a patrons and donors party tonight, Grand Opening Concert featuring Kidd Jordan and Family (sold out) on Friday plus a Tremé Neighborhood and Community Open House and Heritage School of Music Holiday Concert (free admission) on Saturday.

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation purchased the historic building at 1225 N. Rampart Street – the former Tharp-Sontheimer-Laudumiey Funeral Home – in 2008. After extensive planning, the foundation determined to use the space as the first permanent home of its free education program, the Don “Moose” Jamison Heritage School of Music, which has operated on local university campuses since its inception in 1990. The building also will house many of the Foundation’s other programs while also serving as a community arts center.

NEWPORT, RI, November 24, 2014 – The Newport Jazz Festival® presented by Natixis Global Asset Management initiated a third full day of music at Fort Adams State Park in 2014 to present the panorama of energy and talent that George Wein and his veteran staff continue to find in young musicians currently searching for new directions in jazz.  Friday concerts at Fort Adams will return on July 31, 2015 with a stellar line-up, including Kneebody and the sophomore appearance of Snarky Puppy, as well as other artists who are emerging in the popular vein, while still maintaining time-honored jazz traditions.

“What we created at the 60th anniversary festival has become the most exciting addition to the jazz festival in many years,” said George Wein, producer of the Newport Jazz Festival since its beginning in 1954.  “More than 2,500 people attended the Friday concerts at Fort Adams this past summer, and the spirit they brought was unbridled.

Newport Festivals Foundation, Inc.™ Exceeds Goal
for Doris Duke Charitable Foundation

Artistic Reserve Grant

PictureMiguel Zenón (photo credit: Ayano Hisa)
NEWPORT, RI, November 18, 2014 – Newport Festivals Foundation, Inc.™  (NFF) has exceeded its goal to raise $750,000 towards a three-to-one match to create a $1,000,000 artistic reserve grant from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation (DDCF), it was announced today by George Wein, Chairman of NFF. The endowment is dedicated for the George Wein/Doris Duke Artistic Programming Fund, which will continue Mr. Wein’s goal of presenting emerging artists and new works at the world-renowned Newport Jazz Festival®.

“We are proud to have raised the funds ahead of schedule, and we are grateful for many generous contributions,” said Mr. Wein.  “However, we couldn’t have achieved this goal so quickly without the support of our dear friend Charlie Bourgeois. Charlie was with me from the very beginning, and his work with the press made the Newport Jazz Festival known around the world. He spearheaded the festival’s public relations efforts until he died in January at the age of 94. Yet, even in death, his love and dedication for the festival continue to live on through his substantial financial donation. There is much more work to be done to secure the future of the Newport Jazz Festival, and we thank the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation for its ongoing support.”

Cephas Bowles, 40-year Public Radio
Advocate and Innovator,
To Be Inducted into

WAER/Syracuse University Hall of Fame
at Gala Ceremony on September 19

NEW YORK, NY September 9, 2014 – Cephas Bowles, a staunch advocate for public radio and jazz for more than four decades and former CEO/President of WBGO Jazz 88.3 FM,  will be inducted into the WAER-FM Hall of Fame at Syracuse University on Friday, September 19, at 12:00 pm. A 1974 graduate of the university, Bowles joins previous inductees including Ted Koeppel, Mike Tirico, Sean McDonough, and Ian Eagle who have made a mark on the field of broadcasting.

“WAER was, and continues to be, a magical place which helped me become the broadcaster that I am today,” said Bowles. “It was an invaluable teaching laboratory for engaged Broadcast and other majors.  For Broadcasting students, the station supplemented our in-class learning.  It became our second home, causing us to miss holiday meals and numerous activities because we had shows to produce and present.  However, I would not have traded that experience for any other on campus.”

Jazz "Messengers" Spread the Word at 2014 Jazz in the Valley

THE MESSAGE OF JAZZ RANG LOUD AND CLEAR AT
JAZZ IN THE VALLEY

By Charley Rosen
Picture
On a glorious summer day in August, the fifth and final set of the 14th Annual Jazz in the Valley Festival was thrilling, nostalgic, even historic; transporting the seven musicians and hundreds of enraptured witnesses into Jazz Heaven.

Six of the jazzmen had been members of various editions of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messenger, and they were all world-class artists. Calling themselves “The Message, ” the lineup had Javon Jackson playing tenor sax, Gary Bartz on either soprano or alto sax, Steve Turre sliding his trombone, Eddie Henderson on trumpet, George Cables fingering the keyboard, Buster Williams on bass, and Lewis Nash on drums. For sure, a super-duper tribute group.
