NEWPORT, RI, October 4, 2017 – Sixteen music students at Gladstone Elementary School in Cranston were smiling brightly when Newport Festivals Foundation, Inc., which produces the Newport Jazz Festival® and Newport Folk Festival®, brought the gift of music – one cello plus three violins, violas, clarinets, trumpets and flutes – to the school auditorium on Thursday, September 28.

"Newport Festivals Foundation, Inc. strives to educate young people about the music of its famous festivals.  Part of that education includes offering students the opportunity to experience making music,” said Deborah Ross, the Foundation’s Director of Education.  “We are happy to work with local public schools, who still have music programs, to give kids the chance to express themselves in ways that complement reading, writing and arithmetic."

Jonathan Cox, music teacher at Gladstone Elementary School, added, "It just doesn’t feel right when we have students who want to learn in school, but don’t have instruments. Because of the Newport Festivals Foundation, every student who wants to learn to play an instrument this year has that opportunity! How great is that?"

Special thanks to Rick’s Musical Instruments in Cumberland, RI, whose generous support allowed the Foundation to purchase additional instruments for the students.

In addition to this contribution, the Foundation also has donated guitars to Newport’s Pell Elementary School, sponsors the after school music program at the Boys & Girls Club of Newport County, presents concerts with the Newport Jazz Assembly band in schools throughout New England and provides tickets to school groups to attend the festivals and meet artists.

Newport Festivals Foundation fosters the legacy and expands the impact of its Festivals through educational initiatives to engage students and introduce them to jazz and folk music. The Foundation’s goal is to offer opportunity, inspire through exposure and facilitate the collection of resources needed for musicians to celebrate and innovate. The focus on creating unique experiences to spark engagement is accomplished through a variety of initiatives, including instrument drives and performances at schools throughout Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut. For more information, visit www.newportfestivals.org.

The 2018 Newport Folk Festival® (www.newportfolk.org) is set for July 27-29 at Fort Adams State Park, followed by Bridgefest® (www.newportbridgefest.com), produced at locations throughout Newport July 30-August 2. The Newport Jazz Festival® presented by Natixis Global Asset Management (www.newportjazz.org) takes place August 3-5 at Fort Adams State Park and the International Tennis Hall of Fame at the Newport Casino.
