Events Featuring Dawes & Deer Tick Will Take Place Each Night of Festival

NEWPORT, RI, April 26, 2013 – The Newport Festivals Foundation, Inc.™ has announced the addition of Taylor Goldsmith, of Dawes, and John McCauley, of Deer Tick, to the Newport Folk Festival’s Board of Advisors. They join members Colin Meloy (The Decemberists), Gillian Welch, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Jim James (My Morning Jacket) and Ben Knox Miller (The Low Anthem). Through their commitment, love and respect for the Festival, the Advisors collectively embody the spirit of the Newport Folk Festival Family and help ensure the continued viability of the annual event, which honors past, present, and future icons of the ever-changing Folk scene. To further cultivate the mission of the Newport Folk Festival, the Board of Advisors will not only liaise with other artists in the music world, but will also serve as "talent scouts" and will be a collective sounding board for Festival producers as future Newport Folk Festival line-ups take shape in the years to come.

“George Wein and I are pleased to welcome Taylor and John to the Board of Advisors,” said Jay Sweet, Newport Folk Festival Producer. “With the continued support of our growing Festival Family, we look forward to fulfilling the Foundation’s mission to present programs to educate young people about Folk and Jazz music, while helping to build the next generation of Folk & Jazz Festival patrons and performers.”
Joanne Hoops, executive director for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Newport County, has seen first-hand the effects of support from the Newport Festivals Foundation. She says the Foundation’s funding “had a tremendous impact on our members, and has made it possible to provide a wide range of musically-oriented programs, and new instruments, to children ages 3-18 … and we feel fortunate that we have had the opportunity to provide children who need us most, access to music education. Children learn about themselves and others by playing music together."
“I’m truly honored to be included on the Board of Advisors for the Newport Folk Festival. I have always felt like the Newport Folk Festival has been able to keep people aware of what the power of song can be,” said Dawes’ Taylor Goldsmith. “Yes, it can be fun and entertaining and lively, and should be, but it can also give voice to a generation and a collective worldview in a way that no other art form can provide. Music has taken on so many shapes and branched off into so many great genres, that it’s easy to lose sight of this more traditional service that a song can provide. And, if anyone wants to reconnect with where that ‘service’ or sanctity of song stands at this current moment in time, the Newport Folk Festival arranges it perfectly year after year.”
“The first concert I ever attended was the 1988 Newport Folk Festival,” remembers Deer Tick’s John McCauley. “My parents took me to see Los Lobos. This was probably the most important moment in my musical career. It’s very cool having such an important and historical festival right in the backyard of where I grew up. It’s an honor to work with the Newport Festivals Foundation, and such an honor to be asked back to the Folk Festival as often as I am.”
DAWES & FRIENDS AND DEER TICK HOST LATE-NIGHT CONCERTS
Newport Festivals Foundation, Inc.™ also announces a series of evening concerts at the historic Jane Pickens Theater, 49 Touro Street, and The Newport Blues Café, 286 Thames Street, in Newport.
“An Evening with Dawes & Friends” will take place Friday, July 26, and Saturday, July 27, at 9:00 PM at the Jane Pickens Theater. Tickets are $ 45. All seating is general admission. Shows are 21+ with valid ID required. Check in will begin at 8:00 PM and doors open at 8:30 PM. Tickets will go on sale Monday, April 29, at 10:00 am at http://newportfolkfest.net/dawes-and-friends/
On Friday, July 26, Saturday, July 27, and Sunday, July 28, Deer Tick will once again host a three-night run at The Newport Blues Café. This will be the third year in a row that the Folk Festival favorites, and Rhode Island locals, have hosted an evening series at this popular venue. Proceeds from these concerts will benefit both the Newport Festivals Foundation and Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation. This year’s evening concerts will take the place of the Backstage BBQ which, for the past two years, has raised funds to benefit the Newport Festivals Foundation.

As one of America's oldest theater buildings, the Jane Pickens Theater is an important part of the social fabric of the city of Newport. Located in Washington Square, the historic center of Newport, RI, the Jane Pickens Theater focuses on utilizing the space for fundraising for a variety of non-profit causes within the Newport community. The home of Newport Blues Cafe is an historic brownstone built in 1892 to house the Newport National Bank.
