NEW YORK, NY, June 5, 2014 – Don’t miss the New York premiere of Rahsaan Roland Kirk: The Case of the Three Sided Dream, a documentary on the world-renowned multi-instrumentalist, at IFC Center, 323 Sixth Avenue at Third Street in Manhattan, on Wednesday, June 11, at 8:00 pm.

Directed by Adam Kahan, the film tells the story of Kirk, who went from a blind infant, to child prodigy, to adult visionary, political activist, and finally to paralyzed showman who toured and played music until the day he died (December 5, 1977).

Take part in a post-film discussion with Kahan, Dorthaan Kirk – Rahsaan’s widow and a founding member of WBGO Jazz 88.3 FM – and trombonist Steve Turre, Kirk’s long-time friend and band member.

Harlem, NY, April 24, 2014 – Jazzmobile, the oldest, not-for-profit jazz arts and education organization famous for its iconic New Orleans-inspired bandstand/floats which bring live jazz to generations of people throughout New York City and beyond, is presenting some of today’s hottest jazz artists at the fourth annual Harlem Jazz Shrines Festival (HJSF), May 4 – 10, with a series of swinging events at the newly-renovated Minton’s, Ginny’s Supper Club, The Riverside Theatre and MIST Harlem.

Jazzmobile’s HJSF events include a salute to the Savoy Ballroom with a tribute to Lindy Hop dancer extraordinaire Frankie Manning featuring The Harlem Renaissance Orchestra plus lecture/dance demonstrations with the Cecil Bridgewater Big Band; a discussion on Charlie Parker with authors Stanley Crouch and Professor Farah Jasmine Griffin; the Jazzmobile Vocal Competition Kick-Off; and Minton’s Playhouse: New Legends on the Bandstand, honoring the legendary birthplace of bebop with alto saxophonists Antonio Hart and T.K. Blue, pianist Christian Sands, singer Charenee Wade and a live recording session featuring drummer T.S. Monk and his Sextet.

NEWPORT, RI, APRIL 8, 2014 – Celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the Newport Jazz Festival ® on International Jazz Day, Wednesday, April 30, at the historic Casino Theatre, 9 Freebody Street in Newport, with a concert by Jon Batiste and Stay Human. Presented by Newport Festivals Foundation, Inc.™ and the Salve Regina University Department of Music, Theatre and Dance, the 7:30 pm concert follows two educational workshops for Newport students.

Batiste and Stay Human kick off International Jazz Day with a morning performance for students from the Pell School and Thompson Middle School. In the afternoon, the band will present a workshop for jazz combos from Rhode Island high schools. The morning and afternoon sessions are being facilitated in collaboration with Alan Bernstein, Supervisor of the Arts for the Newport Public Schools.

NEW YORK, NY - The Jazz Journalists Association presents its third annual JazzApril campaign, concurrent with the Smithsonian's Jazz Appreciation Month culminating in UNESCO's International Jazz Day (April 30). JazzApril supports JAM and Jazz Day by working with grassroots jazz activists to celebrate their local jazz scenes through imaginative use of media and strengthened collaborative networking.

In 21 U.S. cities and Toronto, Canada, jazz community activists will honor local "Jazz Heroes," people of extraordinary devotion and service described by the JJA as "activists, advocates, altruists, aiders and abettors of jazz."

BRISTOL, R.I., March 25, 2014 – At just 29 years old, Aaron Diehl – a “smart young pianist with a fastidious grasp of jazz traditions,” according to the New York Times – has set the music world ablaze with three critically acclaimed records in just five years.

Hot off the heels of his most recent release, The Bespoke Man’s Narrative (2013), Diehl and his trio are set to take the stage on Wednesday, April 16, for an intimate performance that will appeal to lifelong jazz enthusiasts and newcomers alike. Part of the emerging Live at RWU series at Roger Williams University – which hosted jazz legend Freddy Cole and virtuoso saxophonist Harry Allen last November – the free, open-to-the-public concert is offered in association with the Newport Jazz Festival® presented by Natixis Global Asset Management.

The feature documentary film on the music and life of multi-instrumentalist Rahsaan Roland Kirk makes its world premiere at the South by Southwest film festival (SXSW) in Austin, Texas, March 10-15, 2014.

Rahsaan Roland Kirk was a one of a kind musician, personality, satirist and windmill-slayer who despite being blind, becoming paralyzed, and facing America’s racial injustices – did not relent.

His life’s work was exploring sound and making music. Beyond that, he was an outspoken activist who started a political movement to get more exposure for Jazz in America – particularly on TV.

HARLEM, USA, February 19, 2014 – When the Harlem Renaissance was in vogue at the dawn of the 20th Century, the jazz clubs around Jungle Alley, between Lenox and Seventh Avenue – The Savoy Ballroom, Small’s Paradise, Minton’s Playhouse, Clark Monroe’s Uptown House, The Ubangi Club, Park Palace, Connie’s Inn, and others – were the place to be. NEWPORT, RI, February 19, 2014 – In celebration of the 60th anniversary of the world-renowned Newport Jazz Festival® (August 1-3, 2014), the “Newport Jazz Festival®: Now 60” Tour makes a stop in New York City at the Jazz Standard, 116 East 27th Street, March 4-8. Featuring clarinetist/saxophonist Anat Cohen, vocalist/pianist Karrin Allyson, bassist Ben Allison, pianist Peter Martin, guitarist Mark Whitfield, trumpeter Randy Brecker and drummer Clarence Penn, the band has been receiving rave reviews since it kicked off a 17-city tour on February 8 in Atlanta. The first leg of the tour winds down March 30 and will continue with more dates during June, July and August in North America and Europe (including a set at its namesake festival on August 2).

An Arbiter of Good Taste in

April 27, 1919 – January 26, 2014

New York, NY – Charles Bourgeois, who directed public relations efforts for every festival and event produced by music impresario George Wein since the early 1950s, died Sunday, January 26, from injuries suffered after a fall in his home, it was announced by Newport Festivals Foundation, Inc. He was 94.

Born April 27, 1919, in Island Pond, Vermont, Mr. Bourgeois was a graduate of Boston University (BU), where he produced concerts and first met Mr. Wein. A devotee of piano jazz, as well as vocalists, he produced a well-received BU event featuring Lennie Tristano and Mary Lou Williams. Following a stint in the Army during World War II, he returned to Boston and began making the rounds on the social scene. Mr. Bourgeois visited Mr. Wein’s popular jazz club Storyville in Boston’s Copley Square Hotel regularly in 1951, often bringing music critics with him.
