Brooklyn, NY, May 1, 2018 –  Long before Wakanda was a household word, Bethany Baptist Church was steeped in the rich culture of Africa. For the past 25 years, the historic church, located at 460 Marcus Garvey Blvd. in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, has proclaimed the theme “Unashamedly African, Unapologetically Christian” on its annual Africa Day. This year’s celebration is set for Sunday, May 6, at 10:45 am with The Reverend Al Sharpton, founder of the National Action Network, as guest celebrant.

“While we have dedicated the first Sunday in May for the annual celebration of our heritage, Bethany has and always will proclaim our theme year-round,” said The Reverend Dr. Adolphus Lacey, Bethany’s Senior Pastor. “The celebration comes not just in the music, the garments or the décor, but as African people, it is ingrained in our hearts and in our spirit.”

In addition to the guest preacher, Bethany’s celebration will include African drumming dancing and special choir selections. The church will be draped in cultural fabrics, and members and friends will dress in African attire.

Everyone is invited to join Dr. Lacey and the Bethany Church family at Africa Day. African attire is requested, but not required.
