Harlem USA, September 9 – Rep. John Conyers, Jr., (D-MI), Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee, and Dean of the Congressional Black Caucus, will once again serve as the Honorary Host of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Annual Legislative Conference Jazz Issue Forum and Concert. The events will take place during the CBCF’s 46th Annual Legislative Conference, September 14-18, at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center (WEWCC), 801 Mount Vernon Place, NW, Washington, DC 20001.

The 2016 ALC Jazz Concert, presents the Jazzmobile All-Stars: trumpeter Jimmy Owens, alto saxophonist Antonio Hart, pianist Danny Mixon, bassist Larry Ridley, drummer Winard Harper, and vocalist Charenee Ward; and the Washington Renaissance Orchestra, led by drummer/Artistic Director Nasar Abadey, and pianist/Musical Director Allyn Johnson, with special guest, alto/soprano saxophonist Joe Ford.

The concert will be held on Thursday September 15, from 8:00 to 10:30 pm, in Ballroom A of the WEWCC. Doors open at 7:00 pm. At 7:30 pm, WPFW radio host Candy Shannon will conduct a Meet the Artist Conversation with Mr. Abadey and Mr. Johnson.
The concert commemorates both the 50th anniversary of Jazzmobile (1964-2014), the world’s oldest, non-profit institution, co-founded by pianist/educator Dr. Billy Taylor, and 90th birthday of saxophonist/bandleader/composer John Coltrane. During the concert, Rep. Conyers will present 2015 CBCF Jazz Legacy Awards to Owens, Jazzmobile – with Director Robin Bell-Stevens and daughter of Dr. Billy Taylor, Kim Taylor-Thompson accepting – and Joe Ford.

The 2016 CBCF ALC Jazz Issue Forum, entitled Jazz Preservation, Education and Promulgation: The Jazzmobile Model, will be held on Thursday September 15, 2016, from 1:00 to 3:00pm, in Room 146A of the WEWCC.

This year’s forum will explore the history of Jazzmobile: the world’s first non-profit organization dedicated to jazz, co-founded by Washington DC composer, pianist and educator Dr. Billy Taylor. The featured presenters are Aaron Myers and Herbert Scott of the DC Jazz Lobby.

The panelists will include Jazzmobile Director Robin Bell-Stevens; Jazzmobile clinicians and performers Winard Harper, Jimmy Owens and Dr. Larry Ridley; former Clef Club of Philadelphia student Jordan Williams; Washington, DC jazz entrepreneur Omrao Brown; Richmond Jazz Society President B.J. Brown; and Barbara Grubbs, Co-Founder, SAX: Summer Music and Jazz Camp, Baltimore, MD. CBCF ALC Jazz Issue Forum and Concert Executive Producer Cedric Hendricks will moderate the panel.

Since 1985, The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF) Jazz Issue Forum and Concert has convened during the Foundation’s Annual Legislative Conference for the purpose of celebrating and educating the public about jazz, via performances and a wide variety panelists who discuss various aspects of the jazz experience in order to gain a better understanding of the diversity and vibrancy of the music as a dynamic cultural phenomenon in our society. The CBCF ALC Jazz Issue Forum and the Jazz Concert are both free and open to the public.

Jazzmobile is the oldest not-for-profit arts organization created just for jazz in the country. Founded in 1964 by jazz masters Dr. Billy Taylor and Daphne Arnstein, its mission is to present, preserve, promote, and propagate jazz through quality music education and performance programs: workshops, master classes, lecture demonstrations, as well as out-of-doors mobile Jazz performances and in clubs and special concerts in major concert halls. The annual SUMMERFEST free mobile concert series is New York’s longest running continuous Jazz festival! To learn more visit
