The Preservation Hall Jazz Band Presents Contemporary Approach to Traditional New Orleans Sound at Newport Folk Festival on Sunday, August 1

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band (Photo Credit: Shannon Brinkman)

NEWPORT, RI, June 22, 2010 – Of all the acts confirmed for this year’s eclectic Newport Folk Festival, perhaps none better personifies the 51-year cultural institution than does the New Orleans-based The Preservation Hall Jazz Band, a half-century tradition in its own right.

Under the guidance of founder and producer George Wein, Newport Folk has long been known as the granddaddy of all music festivals. And, as they have done in the past, Wein and co-producers Bob Jones and Jay Sweet have spent a lot of time over the last year getting their hands on the current pulse of the music scene.

Over the years, the development of this goal has led to some of the most interesting collaborations, and most profound moments, in the history of modern music. It’s no wonder this year’s search led them to New Orleans’ famed Preservation Hall, a place where, as Louis Armstrong once noted, “you’ll find all the greats.”

Wein’s own New Orleans legacy as founder of the world-renowned New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, an accomplishment he notes along with the tradition of Newport Folk as the highlights of his career, ensured they did not have to look too far.

Wein’s favorite achievements have always been fundamentally connected. He was responsible for bringing Cajun music, and a piece of New Orleans, to Newport over 50 years ago. It’s this continuing tradition that made PHJB a natural fit at the Fort. Whether it’s been Balfa, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Dr. John or Ben Jaffe joining Pete Seeger’s band for last year’s 50th anniversary celebration, the Big Easy influence has always been present at Newport.

“It’s fantastic to have The Preservation Hall Jazz Band at the Newport Folk Festival again,” said Wein. “They performed in Newport in the early 60’s when the band and the festival were first getting started. I met the group’s founder, Allan Jaffe, when I first went to New Orleans, years before doing the Jazz & Heritage Festival. Allan was my mentor and guide around the city and through its magnificent cultural history. The band is very much a part of life in New Orleans and it reflects, not only what the city is all about, but what music is all about.”

PHJB, much like Newport Folk, has taken a more contemporary approach in presenting the traditional New Orleans sound, recruiting younger players and expanding its repertoire while continuing to hire musicians whose strong links to the Cajun culture assure the music’s authenticity.

The combination makes for a multigenerational mix with appeal to a range of musical constituencies, not just aficionados of traditional jazz. Ben Jaffe, current PHJB director and son of founders Allan and Sandra Jaffe, explains, “What we’re doing is part of a continuum. Part of a tradition that is now in its fifth and sixth generation.”

It’s this concept of artistic continuum that makes the bond between Newport Folk and Preservation Hall a very natural fit. As the festival has grown with the passing years, there has been a focus on blending the “old folk” with the “new folk,” and the annual lineups and on-site collaborations have not disappointed loyal and new festival goers alike.

The parallels are not lost on members of Preservation Hall – a post-midnight collaboration with Yim Yames of My Morning Jacket, another 2010 Newport Folk artist, at this year’s NOLA Jazz Festival ensures that the festival traditions are engrained in the band’s history, and leads to anticipation for some exciting performance possibilities at Fort Adams. In fact, James is just one of many Newport Folk artists, past and present, to appear on PHJB’s acclaimed collaboration album, Preservation. Others include Andrew Bird, Del McCoury, Pete Seeger, Tao Rodriguez Seeger, Brandi Carlile, Richie Havens, Steve Earle and Cory Chisel.

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band began touring in 1963, under the leadership of Allan Jaffe who had pulled the band together two years prior. Many of the band’s charter members performed with the pioneers who invented jazz in the early 20th century including Buddy Bolden, Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, and Bunk Johnson.

Band leaders over the band’s history include the brothers Willie and Percy Humphrey, husband and wife Billie and De De Pierce, famed pianist Sweet Emma Barrett, and in the modern day Wendell and John Brunious. These founding artists and dozens of others passed on the lessons of their music to a younger generation who now follow in their footsteps, much like the current PHJB lineup – a concept that very much embodies the mission and direction of the Newport Folk Festival.

After kicking off with Steve Martin & The Steep Canyon Rangers, Tim O’Brien and Sarah Jarosz on July 30 at the International Tennis Hall of Fame at Newport Casino, the 2010 Newport Folk Festival continues July 31 and August 1 at Fort Adams State Park. Tickets and more information are available at www.newportfolkfest.net.

Wein has, since 1959, found Newport a scenic and hospitable venue for presenting the very best of this country’s blues, roots, gospel, country, bluegrass, Cajun and traditional folk music. Last year’s 50th anniversary edition paid tribute to the great performers who wrote the proud history of this festival, notably co-founder Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Ramblin’ Jack Elliot, Arlo Guthrie and Mavis Staples.

George Wein’s New Festival Productions continues to build on the festival’s historic past by featuring emerging young artists alongside some of folk music’s most venerable names. This year’s festival features Levon Helm’s Ramble on the Road, John Prine, Steve Martin & the Steep Canyon Rangers, Yim Yames of My Morning Jacket, The Swell Season, Andrew Bird, The Avett Brothers, Brandi Carlile, Doc Watson & David Holt, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, Calexico, Blitzen Trapper, Richie Havens, Sam Bush, The Low Anthem, Tim O’Brien, The Felice Brothers, Justin Townes Earle, Tao Seeger Band, A.A. Bondy, The Punch Brothers with Chris Thile, Dawes, Nneka, Horse Feathers, Pokey LaFarge & the South City Three, Ben Sollee & Daniel Martin Moore, Sarah Jarosz, Cory Chisel & the Wandering Sons, O’Death, What Cheer? Brigade, April Smith & the Great Picture Show and Liz Longley.

George Wein Celebrates Corporate Sponsorship

As CareFusion Jazz Festival Covers New York

With 47 Concerts at 23 Venues, Including

27 Events Priced at $15 or Less and 7 Free

Healthcare-acquired infections sound pretty bad and jazz sounds pretty good and if listening to a

good thing can help do away with a bad thing, then corporate sponsorship is doing its job.

– Suzanne Lorge, VOXNEWS, All About Jazz – NY (June 2010)

NEW YORK, June 14, 2010 – Producer George Wein has been the Dean of Corporate Sponsorships since he pioneered the idea of sponsor association with music events, beginning in 1969 with The Schlitz Salute to Jazz followed by the Kool Jazz Festival. His company went on to produce titled events for JVC, Mellon Bank, Verizon, Essence, Ben & Jerry’s and others.  Today, he continues that tradition with the CareFusion Jazz Festival New York (June 17 – 26) and CareFusion Newport Jazz Festival (August 6 – 8).

In a world where many people have limited funds to spend on entertainment, corporate sponsorships make it possible to present renowned artists at a cost that makes the music more accessible.

“At the CareFusion Jazz Festival, only four events that take place at Carnegie Hall are high-price tickets. All the rest are free and $15 or less, with just a few priced in the $20 range,” said Wein, “But most important, the sponsor money allows us to let many of the venues we are working with keep the ticket income. So, not only are we paying the musicians, we are helping to ease some of the economic problems of the venues.

“Of course, our free events in Central Park, Soundview Park and Prospect Park will draw thousands of jazz fans. This can only be done when a sponsor, CareFusion, is generously giving to a festival that presents jazz.”

The CareFusion Jazz Festival presents concerts in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx.  Of the 47 concerts, seven are free and 27 are priced at $15 or less.

Free events include McCoy Tyner Quartet featuring Ravi Coltrane, Esperanza Spalding and Francisco Mela plus the Stanley Clarke Band featuring Hiromi at Central Park SummerStage on June 23, 7:00 pm; Bitches Brew Revisited with Graham Haynes, James Blood Ulmer, Marco Benevento, DJ Logic, Antoine Roney, Melvin Gibbs, Cindy Blackman, Adam Rudolph plus the Mike Stern Trio, June 19, 7:30 pm; and Eddie Palmieri y La Perfecta II on June 22, 7:00 pm.  In addition, Brooklyn’s Zebulon is partnering with the CareFusion Jazz Festival to present four free concerts featuring Seabrook PowerPlant and Mostly Other People Do The Killing, June 17; Cooper Moore Trio and Peter Evans Trio, June 20; John Tchicai Group; June 21; and Wake-up! / James Spaulding, Michael Wimberly, Larry Roland, June 23, all with set times at 9:00 pm & 10:30 pm.

Venues that generously offered $15 tickets or otherwise reduced admissions during the CareFusion Jazz Festival are Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, Peter Norton Symphony Space, Flushing Town Hall, The Jerome L. Greene Performance Space at WNYC, The Jazz Gallery, Harlem Stage Gatehouse, Louis Armstrong House Museum, The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, The Studio Museum in Harlem, Barbés, City Winery, Jazz Standard, Puppets Jazz Bar and Zebulon.

At Carnegie Hall, the CareFusion Jazz Festival New York presents Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, Jack DeJohnette on June 17; An Evening with Chris Botti with Special Guest Nikki Yanofsky, June 19; The Genius of João Gilberto, June 22; and Herbie Hancock, Seven Decades: The Birthday Celebration featuring the birthday honoree himself, Herbie Hancock with special guests India.Arie, Terence Blanchard, Ron Carter, Bill Cosby, Jack DeJohnette, Dave Holland, Joe Lovano, Wallace Roney, Wayne Shorter, Kristina Train, Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi and others, June 24.

“We salute CareFusion for choosing to partner with jazz festivals to introduce their corporate brand,” added Wein, CEO of New Festival Productions, LLC. “Without CareFusion, this amazing 10-day festival would not happen. We witnessed the disappointment of jazz fans around the world when we didn’t present a festival in 2009. We are still feeling the overwhelming and warm support that we received in February when we announced that the city’s long-running event was back, this time with a new twist and more affordable concerts across the city.”

The All About Jazz – New York writer Suzanne Lorge perhaps said it best in her June VOXNEWS column, “Healthcare-acquired infections sound pretty bad and jazz sounds pretty good and if listening to a good thing can help do away with a bad thing, then corporate sponsorship is doing its job.”

CareFusion Jazz Festival New York media partners are The Village Voice and WBGO-FM/Jazz 88.3. Hurry Up to Harlem

for CareFusion Jazz Festival New York

Concerts at The Studio Museum, Schomburg Center

and Harlem Stage Gatehouse

NEW YORK, NY, June 2010 – You don’t have to take the A Train, but music lovers should hurry up to Harlem for the CareFusion Jazz Festival New York at The Studio Museum in Harlem (June 17), The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture (June 20) and Harlem Stage Gatehouse (June 25 and 26).

Sponsored by CareFusion, a leading global medical device company, and produced by George Wein’s New Festival Productions, LLC, the festival takes over New York June 17 – 26 with 46 concerts at 21 venues across four boroughs. For more information, go to www.nycjazzfestival.com

What better way to kick off a festival that is sure to be out of this world than with the mystical magic of the Sun Ra Arkestra under the direction of Marshall Allen. Scheduled to land at The Studio Museum in Harlem, 144 West 125th Street, on Thursday, June 17, at 7:00 pm, Allen and the hard-swinging Arkestra will take the audience on a colorful, eclectic journey that is filled with music infused with Sun Ra’s philosophy of space-age science fiction meets ancient Egyptian cosmo trappings.  Did the former leader, who left this world in 1993, really believe he was from outer space? If he didn’t, he never let the public know it. Allen, who joined the band in 1958, continues the legacy of leading the top-notch jazz ensemble through a stellar musical program with a way-out presentation. So, don your most interesting hat and colorful outfit and travel the “spaceways” to catch the excitement of the one-of-a-kind group of cosmic friends.

It’s a Father’s Day Celebration with the Winard Harper Group at The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, 515 Malcolm X Blvd. at 135th Street, on Sunday, June 20, at 3:00 pm. Born in Baltimore in 1962, Harper had a natural affinity for drumming. He was encouraged to play the drums by his father, who noticed him beating on cans when he was a toddler. At the age of five, Winard was developing his skills and making guest appearances with his older brother Danny.  When Winard heard a recording of Clifford Brown and Max Roach, he was irreversibly inspired to play jazz. Constantly in reverence of his predecessors while remaining innovative in his own right, Harper has become one of the most celebrated drummers in jazz. He is a virtuoso on the drum set as well as the balafon, the West African equivalent of the marimba. When not touring with his band, Harper has worked and recorded with Joe Lovano, Avery Sharpe, Steve Turre, Wycliffe Gordon, Frank Wess, Ray Bryant, Jimmy Heath and festival producer George Wein’s Newport All-Stars, among others.

Next, the CareFusion Jazz Festival New York moves over to the Harlem Stage Gatehouse, 150 Convent Avenue, for a two-day celebration highlighting the long, rich musical heritage of Cuba and New York.  Habana Harlem™ presents Henry Butler and Osmany Paredes on Friday, June 25, at 7:30 pm and the Pedro Martinez Project on Saturday, June 26, at 7:30 pm and 9:30 pm.

A five-time W.C. Handy “Best Blues Instrumentalist – Piano” award nominee, Henry Butler knows no limitations. Although blinded by glaucoma since birth, Butler is also a world class photographer with his work displayed at exhibitions throughout the United States. Playing piano since the age of six, he is a master of musical diversity.  A rich amalgam of jazz, Caribbean, classical, pop, R&B and blues influences, his music is as excitingly eclectic as that of his New Orleans birthplace. While his early albums were jazz trio recordings featuring  top-notch instrumentalists including Charlie Haden and Billy Higgins on “Fivin’ Around” in 1986, and Ron Carter and Jack DeJohnette on “The Village” two years later, Butler has increasingly turned to New Orleans music and the blues. His 1990 album, “Orleans Inspiration,” recorded with Leo Nocentelli of the Meters, was followed by “Blues And More” in 1992. Other Butler releases include “For All Seasons,” “Vu-du Menz,” “The Game Has Just Begun” and “Homeland.”

Osmany Paredes Gonzalez is a pianist, composer and arranger whose style blends jazz with his Afro-Cuban rhythmic heritage by using a technique derived from years of classical education. Born in Santa Clara, Cuba, he began his musical education at the age of five. Guillermo Paredes, percussionist with the Santa Clara Orquesta de Música Moderna, was his first teacher and primary influence. After performing with diverse orchestras throughout his homeland, Osmany went on to play at renowned festivals around the world, including appearances with Israel “Cachao” Lopez, Jerry Gonzalez, Celio Gonzalez and Carlos “Patato” Valdes, among others. Since his arrival in the United States in 2003,  Paredes has continued to make his mark on the music scene, performing with his own band as well as with David Murray, Richard Bona, Giovanni Hidalgo, George Garzone, Howard Johnson, Dave Samuels, Jane Bunnett and others.

Dynamic percussionist Pedro Martinez began performing at the age of 11, where he played and sang in comparsa groups in school. Born and raised in Cuba, he had the unique opportunity to work with numerous Afro-Cuban groups, including Yoruba Andabo, Obba Ilu, Tata Guines, Changuito, Anga and many others. Martinez  traveled throughout Costa Rica, France, Spain, and the Canary Islands, and came to the United States in July 1998 after performing with saxophonist Jane Bunnett at the Canadian Jazz Festival in Toronto. In September 2000, he won First Place in the Thelonious Monk Institute’s Afro/Latin Jazz Hand Drum competition at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. This honor led to several more high-profile projects, including work with Nelson Gonzalez, Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez, Robby Ameen, Paquito D’Rivera, Giovanni Hidalgo, Patato Valdes and Candido Camero, among many others. He also performed in the motion picture “Calle 54.”
